Feb 10 (Reuters) - U.S. diesel prices have dropped this month and could go lower, analysts said, an unexpected swoon that coincided with the start of a British and European Union ban on Russian fuel imports. Lower prices could ease inflation worries that have occupied investors. A relatively warm winter across the United States and Europe and lower commercial trucking activity lowered demand. “This week was supposed to be when diesel prices blew out to the moon, but that’s not close to what happened,” said Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho. Diesel demand by truckers fell off at the end of this year as high inflation impacted U.S. demand for goods.

Gasoline prices are now cheaper across the U.S. than they were a year ago, and the price per gallon could fall below $3 for most Americans by the end of the year. Unleaded gasoline was at a record $5.01 per gallon June 14 and stayed high through the summer and fall. Gas prices fell 15 cents per gallon in the past week and are down from $3.80 a gallon a month ago. Even with OPEC+ reaffirming a 2 million barrel a day production cut this past week, oil prices have still fallen. But for now, gasoline prices are in decline.

CNN —Lower gas prices helped consumer confidence bounce back in August, breaking a three-month stretch of worsening sentiment. “Expectations are more sensitive to movements in gas prices,” Shepherdson said in a research note, adding that the continued slide in gas prices could be a tailwind for the survey results. However, while the consumer confidence number is promising, “this is one month,” she cautioned. Consumer confidence is a pretty fickle reading.”The big risk is that what the gas pump giveth, the gas pump taketh away, as Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told CNN Business in an opinion column published Tuesday. “It is a real drain on disposable income [and] it ends up acting as a depressant on consumer confidence,” Stovall said.
